Roger loved sculpting. Problem was, he would get inspired to create a sculpture, then not follow through to actually do it.
I asked, “Have you ever finished a sculpture?”
He said, “Of course.”
“So” I asked, “What was the difference between the times you actually sculpted and the times you didn’t follow through?”
Upon reflection he realized that when he had a deadline, such as in school, or for someone else, he always did it.
I then asked, “So you finished when you had to be accountable to someone else?”
He said, “Yes.”
I wondered, “How can you set yourself up to be held accountable?”
And that was it; he figured out ways to tell his friends, set deadlines, use me and eventually others, to check in with.
