Do You Know Your Life Purpose?

September 3rd, 2010

One of my “30something” clients came to me because she wanted to know, “What I want to do when I grow up”. Of course she was being funny – but also serious.

“What is my Life Purpose?” is an important question because it allows you the opportunity to fulfill your dreams, to make a difference in the world, and to become fulfilled.

So, how do you figure this out?

The simple answer is to know the following:

  1. What do I love to do? (pull out a piece and begin)
  2. What do you care most deeply care about?

Once you know this, it’s a matter of how. I don’t want to sound flippant because often, the simplest answers are the most difficult to accomplish. It’s not uncommon for clients to spend a few months of coaching working on this. And it’s well worth the time; when you care enough to create the life you want, this is the foundation.

Too much or not enough?

August 18th, 2010

I don’t have to tell you how fast things move in our culture – and how little time we seem to have in order to get everything done.

Just about every client I work with eventually needs some assistance with time management. Either they’re overwhelmed with too much to do, don’t have enough personal time, or aren’t completing tasks.

This is what I suggest:

  1. Create a clear and inspiring vision of the long-view. Then, specifically, know how you’d like to spend your time for the next year and put it into a calendar to follow through with. (repeat yearly)
  2. Put logical systems into place; so all your “paperwork” has a defined place. Then schedule blocks of time to get those things done. Make sure you do it in a prioritized fashion with specific goals to complete.
  3. Let the rest go – know that you can’t do everything, so: delegate what you can and throw out what will never be done.
  4. And very important, be sure to enjoy the journey, even if it means scheduling it in.

So, how do you get from where you’re at to where you’d like to be? Block out some time to get organized, and ask for the help you need to get it done.

Does this speak to you?

“Life is the only Game that doesn’t come with a set of rules”

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always wanted to live my life in the best way I know, and to continually try to improve it. The question is always “What is the best way?”
Ever since studying Psychology in the 1970’s, I’ve searched for guidelines, tools, or structures that simplify the ‘rules’; for me it wasn’t Freud, and it wasn’t religion.

Meditation and Yoga have been invaluable. Then I studied Solution Focused Life Coaching and it all came together for me.

My underlying philosophy comes from practicing Meditation – do the practice, still the mind, experience life for yourself. Gain clarity, recognize when your mind wanders and stop; then simply come back to focus - no judgment, no force. With heartfelt respect at its deepest level, the path of least resistance; always aiming towards excellence without clinging, is easiest and most effective (not that it doesn’t take discipline to learn!).

Solution Focused Life Coaching is based on Neurolinguistic Programming (how language and the brain function) and scientific studies of successful people (what works!). This holistic system has a dynamic structure that pushes the “envelope” of awareness; it asks future based questions in a goal oriented way (forward movement), and is results oriented. For example, asking “What results do I want here?” as opposed to “Why did I do that?”

Put the two together, and voila! Gentle journey and dynamic movement; it works and it feels good too!

So if Life has no rules, it sure is easier to find some guidelines along the way!

Is your job bleeding into the rest of your life?

July 5th, 2010

Here are some tips that might help:

First get clear about setting your priorities and your boundaries.

  • When you leave work, are you willing to leave it there?
    • If the answer is “yes”, then make it clear that when you’re not at work, you’re not available. Then stick to it. Stop answering the business phone and emails.
    • Don’t bring work problems home to your family. Break the habit of discussing work issues during personal time.
    • Find effective tools unwind quickly after work so you can be present to whoever you’re with and whatever you’re doing. For example, Yoga and Meditation work well for me. I know someone who dances to unwind! Use your imagination…
    • Block out time – plan ahead – for what is most important in your life – family, friends, love!
    • Block out time – plan ahead – for healthy living; sports, eating well, spiritual growth or walks in the woods.
    • Block out time – plan ahead – to enjoy life; art, music, love!
    • Block out time – plan ahead – to be sure you’re doing what’s meaningful; volunteer, learn, get involved!

And the amazing thing is, when you take time for yourself, you have more to give; and often perform better at work too!

THINK RESOURCEFUL

June 15th, 2010

It’s not uncommon for one of my clients to make a statement that extends from an unresourceful belief. What I mean is; the belief itself is keeping her from getting what she wants.

For example, one of my clients said, “I always attract losers”, and she proceeded to give me some examples of men she has dated.

I asked, “What would you like to have instead?”

She said, “To attract supportive and successful man”.

I asked, “just suppose you tried an experiment, and for 1 month you played around with the belief “I attract supportive and successful men” and just see what happens?

She laughed, and said “okay. For one month I will keep repeating: I attract successful and supportive men, and see what happens.”

Sure enough, 1 month later, she reported back that she noticed 2 or 3 men that seemed successful and kind, and who showed interest in her. Then she got an “aha” moment: before, when a nice guy began a conversation with her, she blew it off as if it didn’t count. Now she was paying attention and giving it credence – and allowing herself to respond!

Did you know that it’s been shown scientifically, that whatever someone believes, they tend to notice information that backs it up?  Try it for yourself and see…

Throughout our lives we have experiences and we make conclusions about those. What we believe in one situation may have helped us then, but may not work any longer – or in another situation. Yes, we can choose what we want to believe!

The next time you catch yourself saying something that’s not resourceful, consider shifting it to something that’s more helpful and see what happens!

Are you stuck wanting change that you can’t seem to accomplish by yourself?

May 10th, 2010

Richard Beckhard and David Gleicher came up with a formula to explain the 3 key elements that must be present for real change to happen:

Here’s the formula: D x V x FS > RC

D is your current level of dissatisfaction
V is your vision of what is possible
FS are the positive first steps towards the vision, and your willingness to take them
RC means real change; sustainable change

In other words; real, sustainable change will only take place when all of the first 3 elements; dissatisfaction (D), vision (V), or first steps (FS), are strong enough to overcome your resistance to change.

Any of the three variables may be strong enough to start change in motion; yet to make lasting change, all three must be strongly present.

If you’re having trouble making the change you want, the first thing to do is figure out which element is low.

Here’s an example: When John first walked through my door, he was feeling stuck. He was a stay at home dad, and although he loved his children, he’d had enough. He was ready to go back to work. Still, he’d been out looking for work with no luck. Problem was, he wasn’t sure what direction to go in, and he felt unsure of his abilities.

John had a high level of dissatisfaction; his vision wasn’t clear and he didn’t know what to do next. John had a degree in Architecture. It didn’t take long to reconnect with his passion for design and figure out what area he wanted to specialize in. Now his vision was clear.

It took a bit longer to build up his confidence to get back into the field. What he needed was a step by step approach to do some research, make some personal connections with key people, and brush up on his skills; bite-sized, doable action steps. After that, he was ready for his next step – to apply for jobs. He took the risk and got a position with a firm he liked. It took a few years to work his way into the position he wanted. Well worth the change!

And no problems with the kids! His wife stepped in by reducing her hours at work, they got some part-time child care, and he continued his great relationship with his kids. No one suffered at all!

When all 3 elements were sufficiently in place – dissatisfaction with his daily life, a clear vision of the kind of Career he wanted, and do-able action steps, he overcame resistance.

Where in your life do you want to make a change? Which elements are present? Which are missing? Do you need assistance overcoming resistance to change? How might your life be different if you did?

Be Prepared for Your Business to Grow

April 20th, 2010

One of my clients said, “I’m not stuck you know, my business is growing like wildfire and I’m loving it! What I want from you is to help me improve what I’m doing so I won’t get stuck later!”

Now that’s what I call a smart woman!

Growing a business can be very tricky. Here are some of the things you need to consider before you get into trouble:

  • What does success mean to you?
  • Do you know where you’re going? (What is your vision?) (What are your goals?)
  • Is your Brand something you can grow with?
  • Are you staying profitable? More work doesn’t always mean more profit.
  • Are your policies clear and consistent?
  • Are you hiring people who will grow with the company? (What hiring criteria do you go by?)
  • Do you have plan B ready, just in case?

The better prepared you are, the more able you will be to whether unforeseen situations.

  • Are you growing with your position?
  • If your business is growing properly, your own position will change

Are you ready to step into that position and delegate what you no longer need to do?

If you know where you want to go, you’re more likely to get there. That’s what Coaching is all about.

How Effective are your Goals?

March 1st, 2010

Successful people know that setting goals is a strategy that works.

But did you know that some goals are more effective than others?

Here are some questions to check your goal setting against:

First create your goal; then ask:

  • Is this goal within my control?
  • Will this goal energize me or deplete my energy?
  • Are the results I want clear and specific?
  • How will I know when I’ve reached my goal?
  • Do I have a target date?
  • Is this do-able given the circumstances?

As a coach, I know that when my clients commit to goals, it’s important that they are the kind of goals that are a “set-up” for success. These are some good questions to help you to succeed.

*If you’d like support reaching your goals, give me a call and let’s talk.
